  1. ANIMATIONS AND PPTs:

For incorporating the working of various engineering concepts to students, our faculty members have prepared several animations and PPTs in various subjects of civil engineering. The presentations are provided with different types of media - including images, sounds, animations, and much more. This enhances the students’ abilities to retain what they are being taught, especially those who are visual learners. The following table 5.5.1 gives various animations and PPTs shown in classroom through LCD Projector:

  1. Peer teaching, Counseling and Class room Seminars:

(a) Peer Teaching: Peer to peer teaching is being used in the college, which is an effective method in the classroom/ lab to enhance learning. This enables the students to revise their learned topics and be able to consolidate it by teaching it to fellow students. A visible difference has been observed in the class room with peer teaching. Students have improved understanding of their subject knowledge and increase in their confidence too. The faculty plays the role of a facilitator while the topic is delivered by the student.

These are the various benefits we have observed during peer teaching:

Consolidate Learning: By teaching to a peer, students review their own learning, which allows them to strengthen their own knowledge and skills.

Increase Confidence: This type of learning activity boosts self-confidence because students realize that the classroom teacher perceives them as experts and trusts them enough to share their expertise with a peer.

Develop Communication Skills: Students must use strong communication skills to be able to provide clear directions, listen to feedback, and then adjust the next set of instructions accordingly so that their peer is successful.

Assess Learning: The teacher is able to assess students’ understanding of the material based on their ability to share their knowledge and skills with a fellow peer, that could not be accomplished using a paper and pencil test.

(b) Counseling: A counselor guides a group of twenty students, to improve academic performance of the students by identifying barriers to learning. Counselors are working with students individually to help students to work through difficult issues so that they can stay focused in the classroom and get the most of college.

(c) Classroom Seminars: Seminars are conducting in the classroom over the course of a few days. In which, every student in the classroom is given an opportunity to deliver a lecture on a concept. This activity will encourage students to gather information, prepare notes, and participate in discussion with peers and faculty. And also, it helps in improving communication skills, gaining knowledge, renewing motivation and confidence.

  1. PHYSICAL MODELS:

These are implemented to give hands on experience to the students. For better understanding of concepts, our faculty members were projecting the following physical models:

  • Simply Supported Beam
  • Cantilever Beam
  • Continuous Beam
  • Small Building model
  • Single Reinforced beam
  • Doubly Reinforced beam
  • Column and Footings
  • Flat Slab
  • One way and two way slabs
  • Cross section of a Pavement
  • Prestressed Concrete Beam with prestressing tendon and reinforcement
  • Dam
  • Steel Structural Elements and Connection
  1. VIRTUAL LABS:

Virtual labs aim to provide remote-access to Laboratories in various disciplines of science and engineering for students at all levels from undergraduate to research. It also intends to develop a complete Learning Management System where the students can avail the various tools for learning, including additional web-resources, video-lectures, animated demonstrations and self-evaluation.

The Virtual Laboratory holds a large number of digitized (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitized) texts and images as well as data sheets compiled. The Virtual Laboratory is composed of Essays, Experiments, Technology, Objects, Concepts, Library. All materials are available as pdf downloads. It is possible to create specific collections from the available materials, work on them and share them with other users.

These videos provide a means of interactive instruction and are a very flexible medium. Having the ability to stop, start and rewind is absolutely invaluable. It provides the option to stop each video and challenge students to predict the outcome of demonstration, and elaborate on, or debate a point of historical reference. And also have the option to rewind a section of the video to review a segment to ensure that students understand experiment.

  1. BYNDR:

Byndr is a cloud based online platform, which establish a seamless connectivity between students and faculty. This platform is widely used for transacting all academic related activities like, marking attendance, sharing class notes, giving assignments, sharing lecture plans, posting messages, discussion forums etc. This platform facilitates learning where all the inputs from student as well as the faculty are docked at one place.

  1. TECHNICAL QUIZ:

A quiz is a game which can also be called a mind sport. The objective of every quizzing competition is to encourage our students to look beyond their textual knowledge and establish a relationship between theory and application of the learnt concepts.

It is being conducted in both online and offline mode.

Online: Through Class marker software.

Offline: In classroom through direct questionnaire.

The following are the benefits of conducting quiz:

  • Quizzes are designed to promote, a fun way to study and in the process help improve one’s general knowledge.
  • Quiz competitions enables students to think from different angles or simply ‘to think out of the box’.
  • It promotes a healthy debate amongst participants in order to learn from each other.
  • Quiz competitions are used in colleges and Universities to aid in language development and in particular subject areas of study.
  • Some educational institutes use it as a brief assessment or tool to measure the growth in the knowledge, abilities and / or skills of their students either on a general level or restricted to specific fields for instance, science, maths etc.
  1. WORKSHOPS/SEMINARS/GUEST LECTURERS:

To establish practical knowledge in the field of civil engineering we have organized various workshops and seminars by eminent resource persons from inter and intra departments. Guest exposes students to real-world life experiences from the position of someone who has been there. Guest lectures are being arranged by the faculty as part of course, to fill course gaps. Students get to see the insight and perspective of the guest speaker’s particular field. One important benefit that is derived from having a guest speaker is the enhancement of the students’ educational experience. Workshops are being arranged by the faculty as part of course, to support teaching of the core subjects. By this, students are aware of modern technologies.

  1. FIELD VISITS:

A field visit is one of the best tools that a facilitator can use to provide every student with real-world experiences. In every semester field visits to industry are organized to give a practical exposure to the students. We have conducted few field visits to project the working of various civil engineering structures, so that students will gain the following benefits:

  • Students are energized by the excitement and anticipation of leaving the school/college environment.
  • The transportation to and from the site is often a pleasant open-social time.
  • Students have the opportunity to see new things and learn about them in a more unstructured way.
  • Students have the opportunity to determine what they learn and how they learn it. Said differently, student learning can be interest-driven, not teacher and curriculum driven.
  • Students will experience a more holistic, integrated picture of the information that, in the classroom, may have only been presented in a textual and abstract way.
  1. APPLICATION OF RESEARCH:

PhD thesis of the faculty is introduced in the class room and the commercial implications of research are discussed to make the student aware of the research outcomes.

  1. ADVANCED LABORATORIES:

Our College has been designated as an APSSDC skill center. This has the cutting edge technologies which enable the students to be trained and updated with the current developments in the industry. This gives them relevant industry exposure and makes them industry-ready.

  1. ONLINE RESOURCES: To enrich the learning experience by using audio-video and multi-media and state of the art technology.

www.vlab.co.in (http://www.vlab.co.in/)

www.ocw.mit.edu (http://www.ocw.mit.edu/)

www.nptel.ac.in (http://www.nptel.ac.in/)

www.swayam.gov.in (http://www.swayam.gov.in/)

NPTEL is the online resource used in the teaching learning process.

  1. NPTEL: NPTEL chapter at the college provides e-learning opportunity through online courses in many subjects. So far faculty and students are registered for online course.
